3-1-1 Rules for liquids in carry-on baggage 2022

You can bring a small bag containing liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes through the checkpoint. These are limited to 3.4 ounces or less per container. If you place these containers in a small bag separate from your carry-on bag, TSA officials can quickly check them.

3-1-1 for carry-on = bottle of 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less (by volume); 1 liter transparent plastic bag with zipper closure; 1 bag per passenger in the control container. The one liter bag per person limits the total amount of liquid each traveler can bring. The 3.4 oz (100 ml) container size is a safety precaution.

Be ready. Every time the TSA searches a carry-on bag, it slows down the queue. Practicing 3-1-1 makes the checkpoint experience faster and easier.

Declare larger liquids. Medications, food/baby food, and breast milk are allowed in reasonable amounts over three ounces and do not need to be in the zip pocket. Report these items to the checkpoint for inspection. TSA officials may need to open them for further verification.

When in doubt, place liquids in checked baggage.

You can now carry liquids over 100 ml in your hand luggage if:
- You are traveling internationally to the United States on a connecting flight
- are in transparent containers;
- you bought them in a duty-free shop and
- the store packed them in a secure, tamper-evident bag.

If your liquids are not in a secure, tamper-evident bag, you must pack them in your checked baggage.
