If you're not much into beer or ale and spirits are too extreme for your tastes, you've no doubt considered making Twisted Tea your drink of choice when drinking with friends.
Made with well-brewed black tea, a touch of lemon and that all-important alcohol infusion, it's a fantastic choice for a leisurely sip, but is it really capable of getting you drunk? And if so, how much would you have to drink to get a good effect?
Well that's exactly what we are going to discuss today.
I'll walk you through the strength of this fantastic iced tea, the effect it has on your BAC (blood alcohol content), the impact of carbonation on getting drunk, and of course, how many tea brews you need. I need to drink to really enjoy myself.
Let's do it!
How many twisted teas will get me drunk?
As with any alcoholic beverage, the amount of Twisted Tea you need to feel a little perky depends on your body weight and tolerance.
No matter what drink you choose, drunkenness always comes down to your BAC, which, as mentioned earlier, stands for blood alcohol content.
BAC is a measure of how much alcohol has reached your bloodstream and is now flowing through your body.
The calculation method is evaluating the amount of alcohol in milliliters in every 100 ml of blood.
This measure is used to create official drunkenness scales that can be used to make laws and guidelines.
For example, under US federal law, a BAC of 0.08% is considered the limit for safe driving. Anything beyond that limit would be considered drunk driving.
Another example of its use is determining when an underage drinker is legally drunk. For minors, the legal limit of 0.02% is considered.
Now, as I'm sure you know, some people just can't handle drinking as well as others.
We all know someone who ends up wearing the porcelain halo after just a few cans, but why?
Well, that's because there are a number of factors that determine your BAC after drinking, the most important of which is your weight.
The reason for this is very simple: with more of you to fill up, the alcohol is finely dispersed in your system, leading to a lower BAC than your tiny friend after drinking the same amount of alcohol.
So, back to the question at hand, the amount of Twisted Tea needed to get you drunk depends on your current body weight.
But don't be disappointed if you came here looking for a specific figure, because I'll explain how you can find it here and now.
We'll use a little math for this (boooo), but it's nothing too exhausting, so don't worry.
We will use a formula created by Mr. Erik M. P. Widmark, an innovative chemist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Expressing the formula in words, we'll take the grams of alcohol consumed, divide by body weight in grams, multiplied by a gender constant, and then multiply by 100.
To express this formula as an equation, we will refer to alcohol as A, body weight as W, and the gender constant as r.
Let's take a look at this, shall we?
BAC = (W/(Width x Depth)) x 100
The gender constant for men is 0.68 and for women 0.55.
The trickiest aspect of this equation is calculating A, but we can navigate using a pattern. The alcohol level in a typical 12 oz, 5% ABV American drink is 14 g.
Fortunately, there is a 12 oz 5% ABV Twisted Tea can that fits this equation perfectly — yay!
So let's look at some specific weights to give you an example of this formula in action.
I weigh 100 kilos
For male drinkers weighing 100 pounds, you can expect to get legally drunk after about 1.8 cans of Twisted Tea.
Unsurprisingly, for female drinkers, that number is slightly lower. A 100-pound woman will be considered legally intoxicated after just 1.4 Twisted Teas.
I weigh 120 kilos
If you're a 120-pound man who likes a drink, you can expect to be legally drunk after just 2.1 Twisted Teas.
For 120-pound female slurpers, a police officer would consider you drunk after about 1.7 Twisted Teas.
I weigh 140 kilos
It takes 2.5 twisted teas to get a 140-pound man legally drunk.
A 140lb woman will only take 2 Twisted Teas before having to hand over the keys to someone more sober to get home.
I weigh 160 kilos
For a 160-pound male drinker, you're looking at something like 2.8 Twisted Teas to get legally drunk.
For a 160-pound drinker, you should expect to be intoxicated in the eyes of the law after about 2.3 Twisted Teas
I weigh 180 kilos
For a man of his weight, he would normally drink 3.2 teas twisted before he would be considered legally drunk.
And for a woman, about 2.6 twisted teas will get you there.
How strong is twisted tea?
There are two options when it comes to Twisted Tea, the standard version and the light version. Standard Twisted Tea has 5% ABV, while Twisted Tea Light has 4%.
The Widmark BLC calculator in more detail
Astute readers may have noticed a slight problem with the way I presented Widmark's formula above, which is the absence of time as a variable, but before we add that missing dimension to our sum, a word about precision.
While this formula may be accurate, it will never fail. We're dealing with estimates here, so it's best not to use them to figure out if we can go home.
Play it safe when drinking and take a taxi or take a walk.
Alright, put your headphones back on to think; we're diving back into math.
To account for time, we need to tweak the formula a bit, as generally speaking, our BAC will drop by about 0.015 per hour. This leaves the formula a bit like this...
BAC = [A/(A/An x r)) – (Al x 0,015)
Of course, the H stands for hours in our modified formula, or more specifically, hours since you drank that first Twisted Tea.
Is a twisted tea equal to a shot?
While the shots are stronger, a can of Twisted Tea is significantly larger, meaning you're likely to get more drunk than a single shot, unless that shot has 1.5 ounces of 80 alcohol, which would be more or less equal.
How many twisted teas equals a bottle of wine?
The typical 750ml bottle of wine equals about 5 standard drinks, and as we stated above, Twisted Teas is the epitome of "standard" in the US, so 5 12oz Twisted Teas is our answer!
How many twisted teas equals a beer?
As a 5% beverage, like most beers, one Twisted Tea equals one pint.
I'm drinking for the first time. How many twisted teas will get me drunk?
One thing we haven't covered so far is alcohol tolerance. Some people have a higher tolerance for parsley than others.
Even if they share the same BAC, the person with the higher tolerance will feel less drunk than the other.
Your tolerance combined with your body weight will determine how many Twisted Teas you should drink when you first get drunk.
Remember to think carefully before ordering each new drink. Evaluate how you feel. If you feel dizzy, maybe let the next one go.
Will a carbonated drink get me drunk faster?
There is some evidence to suggest that within the first 30 minutes of consumption, carbonated drinks like Twisted Tea will get you drunk more quickly than non-carbonated drinks, as the pressure of gas in your stomach speeds up absorption.
Either that or the gas speeds up the digestion process, pushing the drink quickly into the small intestine, where most of the alcohol is normally absorbed.
After this 30-minute period, there is no noticeable difference between carbonated and non-carbonated beverages in terms of absorption rate.

Hi, I'm Andrew Carr and I find beer fascinating. Not just drinking (though that's a bonus!), but everything associated with it. There's a lot to learn: the fermentation process, the best glasses for each type, recipes to make at home... The list is long!
I've been brewing my own beer for nearly a decade and I'm proud of my home setup. I've made sours, pale IPAs, stouts, you name it, probably in the comfort of my own home.

Given the general rule, if your blood alcohol content is at the limit of 0.08, it would go down to 0.065 after one hour. It would take roughly five hours and twenty minutes for your body to completely metabolize the alcohol and eliminate it from the body.
It takes 30 minutes to feel the effects of alcohol.
It may take an hour to metabolize a drink, but it takes approximately thirty minutes before you feel alcohol's effects. This is a good gauge for pacing yourself. Drinking more than one drink every 30 minutes means you are probably drinking too much, too fast.
Standard Drinks and BAC
For every one drink, your BAC goes up by about 0.02 percent, so reaching a BAC of 0.08 percent takes about four to five drinks.
Twisted Tea contains malt-the same alcohol that beer contains. It contains 4% to 5% alcohol content, which is comparably lower than wine, rum, whiskey, or tequila. However, the base malt can make you drunk after nine to ten cans.Does body fat affect how fast you get drunk? ›
